In the 19th Century, prior to the advent of moving pictures, a device called a stereoscope was all the rage. It was a set of lenses mounted on an arm that held two images at a distance. Looking through the stereoscope made the images jump into 3 dimensions. This gave rise to a demand for unique images to display. The series known as Les Diableries (French for "the works of the devil") is an example of such an image. Painstakingly created miniature sets display skeletons cavorting in tiny hells, as if to mock the entire idea of death and the afterlife.
